Friday and Saturday, October 24 & 25, 2003

Somerset County United Way's 1st Annual Youth Make A Difference Day was a success! Approximately 100 youth volunteers of varied ages participated in local community service projects throughout central New Jersey.

Somerset County United Way was pleased to coordinate this year's Youth Make A Difference Day with support from our caring community partner: Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Inc.

On Friday, 10/24:
*Environmental areas were cleaned, rails were cleared and wooden bridges were sealed at the Great Swamp Watershed Association's conservation area by 8th graders from St. Joseph School in North Plainfield, students from East Mountain Day School in Belle Mead, and students from Raritan Valley Community College.

*David Weller from Bridgewater-Raritan High School and Katherine Egan from Rutgers Prep sanded and painted children's desk sets to make them safe and pretty for use at The Jointure.

On Saturday, 10/25:
*Girl Scout Troop #17, Manville High School National Honors Society students, along with Carol and Eric Basile, painted two preschool classrooms at The Learning Gate.

*Mighty Preppers 4-H club and Girl Scout Troop #895 helped to pack holiday cards that will raise money for The Children's Museum.

*Bridgewater-Raritan High School students and the Austin Family helped make Halloween crafts and carve pumpkins with underprivileged children at Alternatives Inc.
